Don’t Be A Rotten Egg

How comfortable are you? When was the last time you shook things up? After we get the comfortable house we wanted, the comfortable job we wanted, the comfortable family we wanted we start coasting on autopilot. We relish the predictable nature of our lives. Some of us even eat the same meals, wear the same clothes, talk to the same 2 or 3 people and participate in the same activities in the exact same order year in and year out. Why? Because it is comfortable and familiar, and we have mastered this process. In and of itself, comfort is not a bad thing; however, too much comfort breeds complacency. We get so content with the status quo that we don’t even look for change. This is a dangerous place to be. Where there is no growth or transformation, there is stagnation and death.
In the C.S. Lewis quote, an egg can be a perfectly good egg, but if it is to reach its full potential, it cannot remain an egg. To fulfil its purpose, it has to develop and become a chicken. Similarly, a caterpillar can be an excellent caterpillar, but it cannot achieve the fullness of beauty for which it was intended unless it undergoes the transformative process in the cocoon. Just like the egg and the caterpillar, we cannot remain the same if we endeavor to reach our greatest potential and be used for our highest purpose.
We have to be willing to explore the area outside of our comfort zone and be open to new ideas and different ways of doing things. As physicians, this is sometimes a challenge for us because we were given a script to follow for the first 11+ years of our medical journey. Then we finished residency or fellowship and found ourselves looking at a blank page.
Some of us are tempted to believe that because we see a blank page, our education and personal development has reached its pinnacle. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Now that the script has ended, the magic can begin! The possibilities and available opportunities are limited only by our imaginations. True transformation begins in our minds. We can explore completely new interests, innovate fresh new ways of practicing medicine or challenge the societal norms surrounding healthcare. We have the skill, the knowledge and the power to do or become anything or anyone we desire.
I encourage you to never stop exploring ways in which you can continue to grow and up level your life. Remember, the egg that doesn’t hatch rots and all of its potential is lost. Don’t be a rotten egg!
