Turns out my kitchen table was the problem, not me.

Turns out my kitchen table was the problem, not me.

July 30, 20262 min read

You have tried to think clearly about your next chapter sitting at the same kitchen table where you pay bills, referee arguments, and answer emails at nine at night. It has not worked.

That is not a failure of willpower. It is a failure of environment.

Research on creative problem-solving shows something specific: the further removed you are from a problem, physically and mentally, the more creatively your brain can actually solve it. Psychologists call it psychological distance. Your body just calls it relief.

There is a phenomenon known as the incubation effect. When you step away from a problem you have already worked seriously to understand, your mind keeps working on it quietly, and it comes back sharper after the break.

But the break only works if you have done the groundwork first. Distance without preparation is escape. Distance after preparation is transformation.

I learned this on a beach in Jamaica

I did not go looking for clarity. I went because I was exhausted. But something happens to your body at the ocean that your spa day cannot replicate. The negative ions in sea air have been shown to elevate serotonin, the feel good hormone. The sound of the waves and the color blue lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Cortisol, the stress hormone most of us are drowning in, drops measurably within twenty minutes near water.

Sitting there, away from every obligation that usually fills my field of vision, I finally heard my own voice for the first time in a very long time. It was screaming: THIS IS NOT SUSTAINABLE. YOU ARE NOT WELL.

That voice had been trying to reach me for months. It could not get through at my desk or my kitchen table. It got through at the beach.

This is how the brain works.

You were not meant to find your next chapter in the same four walls where every obligation in your life already lives. You need distance, real distance, not just a long weekend of doing nothing.

You do not need a vacation. You need distance, on purpose.

You only get one life. Give yourself the space to hear what is next.
