Too Old, Too Busy

Too Old, Too Busy, Too Out of Shape?...I Call B.S.

July 15, 20253 min read

So... I Did a Thing.

Last Saturday, I showed up for the Level 1 Fit Test at my gym--and guess what? I rocked it! Now, this might not sound like a big deal on the surface, but for me, it represents something so much bigger: external proof of an internal shift. Let me be honest — I have zero natural athletic ability. I was that kid in elementary school who always got picked last for team games. (Ouch.) Ive never played an organized sport in my life.

Sure, I have made an effort to prioritize my health with walks and training sessions, but

if I'm being real? I’ve been living in maintenance mode for years.

And if I’m being even more honest, there have been a million “good reasons” — aka excuses — for why I stayed there:

• I’m too old.

• I’m too heavy.

• I’m too busy.

• I’m too uncoordinated.

• I don't need to push myself.

• I don't want to fail or be embarrassed...

Sound familiar?

But then... my own words came back to tap me on the shoulder.

The ones I pour into others all the time:

“You have the power to transform your life.”

“You are capable of more than you realize.”

“You are never stuck”

Whew!

I realized I had gotten comfortable believing the old stories I kept telling myself. Instead of trusting the work I had been putting in — and trusting my trainers, who kept telling me I was stronger than I thought — I let fear and doubt keep me small. Until a few weeks ago, when I decided to do something different.

I showed up for a group fitness class (which I had avoided for years).

And guess what?

I kept up. I finished it.

And the next week, I showed up again.

Same story.

So, when one of the coaches invited me to take the Fit Test, for once, I didn’t instantly

say no.

Instead, I said, “Let me check my calendar.”

The time was open... so I put myself on the schedule.

I was nervous. I worried I might run out of steam or get hurt.

But I showed up anyway.

And the rest? As they say, is history.

Here’s what this experience reminded me:

Your power is yours to give away — or to reclaim.

At any moment, you can make a different choice.

Trust the process.

Change is quiet. It's subtle. If you’re not paying attention, you’ll miss the fact that you’re

already stronger, wiser, and braver than you were yesterday.

Growth is your birthright.

We don't stop growing naturally — we stop challenging ourselves.

(Preaching to myself too, by the way!)

So here’s your food for thought today:

Where in your life are you handing your power away?

Where are you trusting your fears and excuses more than the facts?

Where are you staying small instead of challenging yourself to go higher?

Send me a reply — I'd love to hear from you. Let’s keep growing together.

What’s next for me?

Level 2, of course! Because once you remember who you are... there’s no going back.
